The council will make its decision in January

A west London council is considering banning the opening of new bars and clubs in a bid to reduce anti-social behaviour. Hammersmith and Fulham Council could declare some areas "saturation zones" after complaints from residents. It would mean no new licenses would be granted in Fulham Road, Fulham Broadway and Stamford Bridge, apart from under exceptional circumstances. The council is consulting on the plans until September.

We've got to protect our residents as well as our local traders

A report from the council said: "Over the past few years, the council has become aware that local residents, businesses and visitors within the Fulham town centre area are being affected by crime and disorder and public nuisance on a regular basis. "The council is of the opinion that however tightly controlled and well-run individual premises are in the area, the number of premises in one location is resulting in issues such as excessive late-night noise, rowdiness, intimidation, litter and criminal damage, all of which have had a detrimental effect on the local area." Councillor Greg Smith told BBC London: "We've got to protect our residents as well as our local traders. "And when we've got so many residents coming to us saying, 'We can't cope with this any more', 'We're fed up of being woken up at three in the morning', 'We're fed up of finding vomit and all sorts of unpleasant things on our front steps,' then we've to take action." The council hopes to make a decision in January.
