A second gunman was involved in a shooting at an upmarket west London restaurant, it has emerged.

Last Friday a man, 31, was chased through the packed Harry Morgan's diner in St John's Wood High Street.

The gunman opened fire and hit the man in the leg, along with a 15-year-old boy caught in the crossfire.

Police have now said a second man was shooting at the 31-year-old man from outside the restaurant. They say it is astonishing no bystanders were killed.

Among the diners were pop star Rachael Stevens and BBC chief economics correspondent Hugh Pym.

It was completely indiscriminate - it's unbelievable no-one was murdered

The Metropolitan Police's Trident unit, which investigates gun crime in black communities, is investigating the shooting.

Police said they had no intelligence of gangland frictions brewing - and said the violence had come "out of the blue".

Det Insp Sally Jeffrey told BBC London: "The victim was buying something in the deli part of the restaurant when the gunman came in shooting.

"He pursued the victim into the restaurant and continued to shoot.

"The other suspect was outside shooting through the window."

That meant bullets were travelling from two different directions into a restaurant with two dozen people inside.

But the only bystander hit was the 15-year-old boy, who is now recovering from a leg wound.

Det Insp Jeffrey said: "It was completely indiscriminate - it's unbelievable no-one was murdered.

"Putting members of the public at risk like that was callous."

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward - and say members of the underworld have nothing to fear.

Det Insp Jeffrey added: "If they call police we can speak to them in a sensitive way."

After the attack the gunmen calmly walked away as diners emerged from under their tables. The shooters then broke into a jog. It is thought they escaped in a dark car from nearby Cochrane Street.
