Pensioner hit by police car dies

A 72-year-old man has died after being struck by a police car answering an emergency call in east London.

The man was hit by the marked vehicle at Ridgeway in Chingford. He was pronounced dead at the Royal London Hospital on Saturday afternoon.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said next of kin had been informed but there has yet to be a formal identification of the victim.

The Met has notified the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place.
