Churchill's relative is new mayor

Duncan Sandys
The new Lord Mayor is hoping tackle children's and young people's issues

Sir Winston Churchill's great grandson has become the youngest Lord Mayor of Westminster on record.

Duncan Sandys, 35, became a councillor in 1998 and was elected into the annual post at a Westminster City Council meeting on Wednesday.

His grandfather, Lord Duncan-Sandys, was married to Diana Churchill, the daughter of Sir Winston.

Mr Sandys, who is expected to attend more than 1,000 events, said it was an "exceptional privilege" to be elected.

He said: "While I am immensely proud of my family heritage, I am looking forward to making a further contribution to public life in Westminster as the city's Lord Mayor.

"While Lord Mayor I will be devoting much of my time and energy to children's and young people's issues."

The Lord Mayor has chosen to raise funds for the St Andrew's Club in Victoria, a youth club founded in 1866.
