Man remanded over widow's murder

A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a widow who was strangled in her south London home.

Maureen Cosgrove, 65, lived with family members in a detached house in South Way in Carshalton. Her body was found there on 24 March.

George Maben, 45, of Rosehill, Surrey, was remanded in custody when he appeared at Croydon Magistrates' Court.

A post-mortem examination found that Mrs Cosgrove, who had four children and seven grandchildren, died of asphyxia.

Mr Maben will next appear in court at the Old Bailey on 16 July.
