London's first mobile pool has been launched in a bid to help children who have little access to swimming facilities.

The 12m x 10m pool has been set up in the old sports hall of Lilian Baylis Old School in Lambeth.

The borough is the first of several London councils which will have access to the temporary pool this year.

The scheme is part of the "Pools for Schools" project - a campaign supported by the Amateur Swimming Association.

It aims to ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn to swim.

In August last year, a report by the London Assembly showed that about three million Londoners have poor access to public swimming pools.

Thames Water delivered the mobile pool to the school, constructed it and filled it with 65,000 litres of water in four days.

It will be open until 15 February.
