A 16-year-old boy was stabbed to death as he fended off a heavily armed gang of up to 30 youths in a revenge attack in north London, the Old Bailey heard.

David Nowak was stabbed in the back when a fight at a community centre in Stoke Newington spread onto the street in December 2007.

Eleven youths, all from Stoke Newington and Hackney, deny murder and the attempted murder of his friend.

His 16-year-old friend also denies the attempted murder of one of the youths.

Punctured lung

The court heard David and his friend, who was 15 at the time and cannot be identified, had been fighting members of a gang called the Holly Street Boys at the local community centre.

The friend tried to flee but was caught and beaten with bricks and wooden sticks, the jury was told.

It appears that these stabbings were carried out in revenge because the deceased or his friend had stabbed two Holly Street Boys in the course of the fight

Meanwhile, David shut himself into a play area behind a gate and kept the rest of the gang at bay with a knife.

However, while he was doing this one of them managed to creep in behind him and stab him in the back, jurors heard.

Prosecuting, Brendan Finucane QC, said: "In the course of the fight David Nowak was fatally stabbed.

"His friend was also stabbed, resulting in a punctured lung. It appears that these stabbings were carried out in revenge because the deceased or his friend had stabbed two Holly Street Boys in the course of the fight."

Mr Finucane added: "The deceased was shouting 'I shanked your friend and I licked the blood off the knife'. He produced a knife from his waistband."

The alleged instigator of the attack is Dolovan Barzey, 19, from Hackney.

The other accused youths are Eric Sackey, 19, Gavin Goupall, 21, Marlon Cyrus, 20, Courtney Bramble, 19, Castro Paris, 19, and five 17-year-olds who cannot be named.

David's friend denies the attempted murder of Goupall, who was stabbed during the fight.

The trial continues.
