A 19-year-old man has been jailed for at least five years after stabbing a man in the middle of a crowded street.

Anthony Costa, from Walthamstow, east London, was sentenced after being convicted of the attack in central London's Oxford Street in May.

Steven Bigby, 22, was on police bail on suspicion of raping a 16-year-old girl in Tottenham, north London, when he was attacked by Costa.

Costa was convicted of manslaughter at the Old Bailey.

'No angel'

He had been cleared of murder after Judge Hawkins said he accepted there had been a lack of intent to kill Mr Bigby.

Costa and Mr Bigby were in two groups of youths who started fighting when they met by chance in Oxford Street.

Mr Bigby's younger sister Charlotte told the judge in an impact statement: "We know he was no angel but it does not stop the pain we have been going through."

Mr Bigby was on police bail on suspicion of raping a teenage girl who had caustic soda poured on her in a disused flat in north London.

Three men have since been convicted of the offence and await sentence in Wood Green Crown Court.

He was also on bail and due to stand trial for causing grievous bodily harm to a man at a snooker club.
