Change of wind cancels fireworks

A public fireworks display in north London has been cancelled due to a change in wind direction.

Brent Council said unusual northerly winds predicted for Wednesday could blow the powerful fireworks off course and into the crowd at Roundwood Park.

The local authority added there were no other suitable parks in Brent to move the show to, and it would cost too much to reschedule for another date.

The free display costs Brent £15,000 and attracts up to 20,000 people.

A council spokesman said: "Brent would like to say sorry to the thousands of people who were looking forward to attending this popular event, but hope they understand that the safety of spectators has to be our most important consideration."
