Mount Vernon cancer care reviewed

Chemotherapy patient
Chemotherapy treatment may move to satellite cancer centres

A review has been launched into the delivery of care at the Mount Vernon Cancer Network in Middlesex.

A spokeswoman for East and North Hertfordshire Primary Care Trust, which runs the cancer centre, said the plan was not about reducing services.

But the review will consider whether to move some cancer treatments to satellite sites across the region.

Mount Vernon treats about 7,000 people a year and is considered one of the UK's most prestigious cancer centres.

Patients, doctors and the wider community will be surveyed for their thoughts on how Mount Vernon should grow to meet the needs of the future.

Some patients have said treatment is excellent

National guidelines aimed at reducing travel times for patients are being taken into consideration.

Cathy Williams, of the Mount Vernon network, said it was looking for the best way to plan for the years ahead as cancer rates and treatment options grow.

"It is going to make sure that they are going to receive radiotherapy and chemotherapy services that are of the highest standard and are constantly keeping up with what's going on nationally and internationally," Ms Williams said.

A final decision on Mount Vernon is expected next year.
