Vintage bike sold at record price

The 1939 vintage bike fetched £214,800 at the auction

A motorbike dating to 1939 has sold for a record price of £214,800 at an auction in London.

The classic 1939 Vincent-HRD 998cc Series-A Rapide was sold at Bonhams in New Bond Street, central London.

Another bike - an ex-Roland Martin, Brooklands, 1927 Zenith-JAP 8/4hp Championship Motorcycle Combination -fetched £177,500 at the same auction.

Both vehicles were among the 25 bikes from vintage bike enthusiast Brian Verrall's collection up for auction.

Ben Walker, head of Bonhams' Motorcycle Department, said: "I am absolutely delighted with these results achieved.

"It must also be acknowledged that the success of the sale had much to do with the discrimination and good judgment Brian Verrall had when he built this outstanding collection."

The last motorbike to command a high price was a 1934 Brough Superior 996cc SS100 which went for £166,500 in April.
