London scoops best UK city award

London has been voted the best UK city to visit.

The city beat the likes of Cambridge, Liverpool and Edinburgh to scoop the accolade at the Conde Nast Traveller Reader Travel Awards.

The award-winning cities, countries and travel companies were selected using feedback from thousands of readers of the travel magazine.

The readers thought London's nightlife, entertainment, culture and restaurants were the best anywhere in the UK.

London Mayor Boris Johnson said the award was testament to the wealth and variety of attractions in London.

"Tourism is key to the capital's economy and it's vital that we remain ahead of the competition attracting visitors from around the world all year round," the mayor added.

Visit London chief executive James Bidwell said: "London is the greatest city on earth and we welcome this Conde Nast Award in recognition of our truly global status."

Sarah Miller the magazine's editor, said: "According to our readers London has the best nightlife, entertainment and culture on offer anywhere in the UK as well as the best restaurants.

"Its overall score of 90.22 came about from these very high ranking scores and also for aesthetics and the beautiful buildings that London has.

"In the post-Olympics euphoria it can only be good news for 2012."
