Officer attacked with screwdriver

A police officer narrowly avoided serious injury when he was attacked with a screwdriver.

He was assaulted after chasing three men during an attempted burglary in Abbey Wood, south London, at 0450 BST on Tuesday.

While trying to restrain one of the suspects, he was injured half an inch from his eye. He needed two stitches before being discharged from hospital.

Two men, aged 18 and 19, were arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary.

They have also been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

A youth was arrested near the scene shortly after the incident and has been bailed pending further inquiries.
