A man has been arrested in connection with the death of a 17-year-old stabbed during a street fight in south London.

The victim was among six to eight men involved in the fight in Sumner Road, Croydon, at 0130 BST. The unnamed teenager suffered severe neck injuries.

He was treated in hospital but died three hours later.

A man in his 20s is being held at a south London police station. The victim was the 23rd teenager fatally stabbed or shot in the capital this year.

Police believe the victim lived locally and is a member of the Tamil community.

A post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death as a single stab wound to the neck.

Driver sought

Officers want to trace a mini-cab driver who dropped a white male suspect near the scene of the fight at 0100 BST.

The driver, who they believe was in a blue Ford Mondeo, argued with the passenger prior to dropping him off in Sumner Road and driving off.

The mini-cab passenger then argued with the victim and his friends, who were standing nearby.

He returned to the scene 20 minutes later and the teenager was fatally stabbed soon afterwards. No-one else was hurt.

The passenger, who is being treated as a suspect, walked away from the scene towards London Road, police said.
