Two dead in suspicious flat fire

Two men have died in a suspicious fire at a flat in south-east London.

The pair were found after emergency services were called to Sterling Gardens in New Cross, on Sunday night. Both were declared dead at the scene.

Post-mortem tests were due to be held on the bodies of the two men, who are believed to be in their 20s.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said officers were "keeping an open mind" about the cause of the fire which is being treated as "suspicious".

Residents from the block of 16 flats were evacuated when the fire began.

The building is being checked for structural damage before they are allowed to return.
