Nurse death was tenth at hospital

A nurse who died after a Caesarean at a London hospital was the tenth woman to die at its maternity unit in three years, an inquest has heard.

Ana Maria Denzo, 30, died from severe internal bleeding in 2005 after her operation at Northwick Park Hospital.

The inquest at Hornsey coroner's court was told Ms Denzo was transferred to St Mary's Hospital in Paddington but later died. Her daughter survived.

Northwick Park was taken out of special measures but a new inquiry is underway.

Consultant obstetrician John O'Riordan said he believed the doctor who operated on Ms Denzo had also operated on another woman who died at Northwick Park.

In 2004 he had operated on a woman who subsequently died and whose death the Healthcare Commission later found was probably caused by incorrect suturing of the uterus.

The registrar obsetrician Dr Subramanian Narayanian had carried out hundreds of Caesarians "without a problem", he told the hearing.

The inquest continues.
