Brothers found guilty of murder

Two brothers have been found guilty of murdering a 65-year-old restaurant owner after she refused to hand over her life savings.

Dean Atkins, 26 and Michael Atkins, 25, beat Kam Chung to death at her home in Cowley, west London, in November 2006.

They were also convicted at the Old Bailey of two counts of aggravated burglary, wounding with intent and possessing an imitation firearm.

The men, from Uxbridge, west London, will be sentenced on Wednesday.

An accomplice, Thomas Carty, 21, took his own life last February while awaiting trial.

A post-mortem test found that Ms Chung, who was only 4ft 10ins tall, died of multiple injuries from stamps and kicks to the face and chest.

After killing Ms Chung, the pair broke into the west London house of construction firm owner Bernard Dwyer.

Mr Dwyer, 51, was unarmed and naked when the two masked men attacked him in his bedroom in West Drayton.

But Mr Dwyer, seeing a knife held to his teenage daughter Aisling's throat, decided to fight back, chasing the brothers and their accomplice Thomas Carty from his home.

He later told the Old Bailey how he decided: "If I'm going to die tonight then I'd rather die like a man than a dog."

Aisling, who was 13 at the time, is now too afraid to be left at home without her father, frequently locks herself in the bathroom for fear of intruders, and insists on sharing a bed with her mother Jane at night, the court heard today.

"She has changed from being a bright and loving girl to be a sad and confused one," said her mother Jane Dwyer.

After the case Det Ch Insp Steven Lawrence said: "The defendants showed no regard for their victims at the time and have shown no remorse since.

"Mrs Chung was forced to endure a sustained and brutal attack prior to her death.

"Not content with murdering an innocent lady, they went on to terrify and assault a man and his children in his own home.

"Their victims were remarkable, courageous people who did not give in.

"Mr Dwyer was not prepared to allow his attackers to harm his family and fought them off.

"We would always recommend that the public should ring police first when faced with danger although we recognise the courage shown by Mr Dwyer in this case."
