About 30 firefighters have tackled a blaze in the heart of London's financial district.

Six fire engines were called to a building site in the City at around 1105 GMT where scaffolding had caught fire, the London Fire Brigade said.

Fire crews put out the flames at the old fire drill tower in Milton Court in the Barbican by 1230 GMT.

No one was hurt during the incident and the fire is not currently being treated as suspicious.

The site has been the subject of a planning battle between the Corporation of London and English Heritage.

But in December, the City of London planning committee granted approval for the main building on Milton Court to be demolished.

It will make way for the 70m expansion of the internationally renowned Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2011.
