Vintage cars head for south coast
London to Brighton veteran car run
Thousands of people turned out to watch last year's event
Hundreds of vintage cars took part in the annual London to Brighton car rally.

This year's event had an American theme with 32 makes of veteran US cars including Cadillac, Ford, Oldsmobile, Pierce and Crestmobile taking part.

Each vehicle was built before 1905 and the oldest motorcar in this year's rally is the 1896 Salveson Open Cart.

The 60-mile run to the south coast is said to be the longest running motoring event in the world.

It was first held in 1896 to celebrate the new 14mph speed limit and has run every year, except during the war.

Drivers leave London via Brixton and Streatham on the A23 then go through Norbury to Croydon and on the A235 to Purley, reverting to the A23 to Redhill, Horley, Gatwick and Crawley and on to Brighton.
