Leicester Square was cordoned off when a fire broke out at a restaurant near the popular London tourist attraction.
About 20 firefighters took two hours to put out the blaze which started in Leicester Place, just off Leicester Square, on Wednesday afternoon.
A London Fire Brigade spokeswoman said 75% of the kitchen on the third floor was damaged in the fire.
Police said they expected the cordon to be lifted once fire crews had finished damping down.
Ambulance crews were sent to the scene but no one needed hospital treatment.
