Baby killer is spared prison term
A young mother who killed her baby daughter and hid her body in a disused freezer has been spared jail.

Patricia De Carvalho Braga's daughter was discovered in January, having died from severe head injuries.

She was given a 51-week jail sentence suspended for two years on condition she complies with a supervision order.

Braga, 24, of Winchmore Hill, north London, pleaded guilty to infanticide and will spend part of her sentence receiving psychiatric treatment.

Skull smashed

Old Bailey Judge Stephen Kramer said it was a sad case but Braga, according to reports, was not a danger to the general public.

She was suffering from post-natal depression when she gave birth in a garden shed and then smashed the baby's skull in March last year.

The judge said: "I have to balance the fact that you took a life and pose a threat to any future child, against your evident distress and remorse."

Braga, who had concealed the pregnancy from her family, had then wrapped the baby's head with film and sticky tape, before hiding it in a disused freezer.

The court was told that Braga had given birth to another child in Brazil in 2004 after another secret pregnancy.
