Mother 'abandons' baby with tramp
A mother who handed her baby to a tramp outside a supermarket has been arrested on suspicion of child abandonment.

She left the eight-week-old girl with the man outside Sainsbury's in Bromley, south-east London, on 15 March.

He alerted the store's security guards when the woman and her male friend failed to return after an hour.

A Bromley Police spokesman said: "They said they went off to get some cigarettes and left the baby with a man they said they knew."

The mother, 35, from Erith, has been released on police bail until 12 April, the spokesman said.

The man, 26, who is no relation to the baby, was later released without charge.

Police are examining CCTV to work out for how long the baby was left.

The baby has been placed in the care of the local authority.
