A homeless man has been charged over the stabbing of a Metropolitan police community support officer (PCSO) in central London.

The unnamed officer, 39, who was patrolling in a marked police van, was attacked as his vehicle stood stuck in traffic in Victoria Street on Tuesday.

He was stabbed in the arm and thumb and was treated for minor injuries.

Ian Hutchinson, 38, of no fixed address, is to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court accused of assault.

The officer was wearing a stab-proof vest at the time of the attack.
