The damage will take weeks to repair

A graffiti gang has caused thousands of pounds of damage to a north London Underground (LU) station.

They sneaked into Camden Town station and covered walls, digital panels and CCTV cameras on all of the platforms with spray paint.

The vandals are thought to have entered the station by walking along the tracks when the network was shut down on Christmas Day.

LU staff said the clean-up would take several weeks.

A Transport for London spokesman said the clean-up operation was now under way.

BBC London's Paul Curran said platform four suffered the worst attack, with the walls completely covered by graffiti.

One theory is the gang walked along a Tube tunnel to reach the station.

"Cleaning can only be done at night because the station is still fully operational," the spokesman said.

British Transport Police are examining CCTV footage in a bid to identify the gang.

The attack came after pre-emptive arrests were made by British Transport Police in an attempt to prevent major vandalism attacks. Four people were arrested in London.
