BA still to clear baggage backlog

A breakdown in the baggage belt led to thousands of bags being lost

Passengers who lost their luggage due to a faulty baggage belt at Heathrow may have to wait until the end of the week to recover their belongings.

More than 7,000 bags are still missing after the breakdown at the airport's Terminal Four on Sunday.

The four-hour breakdown affected several flights to Europe and the US.

BA said passengers will be given up to £800 a bag as compensation. It also said it hopes to clear the backlog by Wednesday night.

BA has apologised to passengers and called in extra baggage handlers.

A statement said: "We have sent trucks into Europe and also put on two extra flights to Milan where we will resort the bags into smaller lorries and get them delivered to their final destinations as quickly as possible."
