Latin carnival comes to capital

The south London carnival began with a parade

Tens of thousands are expected at a London carnival billed as Europe's largest Latin American festival.

Carnaval Del Pueblo began with a south London procession of exotic floats and dancers from City Hall at 1200 BST.

It will end at Camberwell's Burgess Park, where numerous Latin American stars will perform until 2130 BST.

Carnival director Luis Mario Tasama said it would "share the happiness, colours and tastes of the 19 Latin American countries in just one day".

Reggaeton star Andy Boy, Colombian all-woman orchestra Canela and Los Embajadores de Vallenatta are among performers at London's eighth Carnaval Del Pueblo.

It will reflect Latin American dance, music and culture and will include food stalls, dance workshops and a funfair.

Co-founder Nuala Riddell-Morales said: "I am thrilled to let Londoners into the secret of being happy - the sheer bliss and stimulation of participating and experiencing the exotic and vibrant music, dance and food of Latin America on your doorstep."

The carnival has been supported by London mayor Ken Livingstone, who said links with emerging economies such as those in Latin America were "vital" for the capital's future.

"Each year the event continues to grow from strength to strength," Mr Livingstone said.

"I feel we have a lot to share and learn from the experience of Latin American countries."
