Sleeping man is beaten to death
A man has died five days after he was beaten by an armed gang as he slept in his own bed in east London.

Malcolm Barnett, 43, was at home in Hunters Hall Road, Dagenham, on Saturday night when six men came in through an unlocked back door.

They demanded cash from two women, who also lived there, before entering Mr Barnett's room and assaulting him with what is thought to be a baseball bat.

Police said it was not believed to be a random attack.

Of the six, five were black and one was white or mixed race. All were wearing hooded tops and were aged between their late teens and mid 20s.

'Not random'

It is thought they left on foot before driving away from nearby Witham Road in a dark saloon car.

The women, aged 44 and 21, suffered minor injuries.

Det Ch Insp Ian Stevenson said: "Our investigation is at an early stage and we are keen to hear from anyone who saw these men in Hunters Hall Road in the early hours of Saturday morning.

"However, we believe that the address was specifically targeted and that this was not a random attack."
