Protest over dangerous cyclists

Concerned parents are to protest at a crossing where they claim cyclists are regularly putting pedestrians at risk by jumping red lights.

The Reay Safely to School group says 60% of cyclists ignore the lights at the junction of Caldwell Street and Clapham Road, Stockwell, south London.

Campaigners will be at the crossing for 15 minutes each morning until Thursday.

Trista Selous said the aim of the protest was to highlight the danger cyclists pose to pedestrians.

"Cyclists often forget that pedestrians are more vulnerable than them", she said.

'I stop at red' stickers

Ms Selous said this issue had been going on for a long time.

"They put their safety and others at risk by jumping red lights and can be scary, not only for children, because they go so fast," she said.

Supporters will stand at the crossing between 0840GMT and 0855GMT from Monday to Thursday holding placards and handing out stickers for cyclists to wear, saying "I stop at red".

Kate Hoey, MP for Vauxhall, is expected to join campaigners on Tuesday to show her support.

She said: "Most cyclists are very considerate and decent on the roads.

"This week of action is to raise awareness and that cyclists have to share the roads and be considerate".

The group claims that four children and one grandmother were hit by cyclists on the crossing in 2005.
