Clowns roll up for 60th memorial

Clowns came from far and wide to attend the service

Hundreds of clowns have descended on east London to pay tribute to the man seen as the father of modern clowning.

Clowns in full costume from across the world attended the memorial service for Joseph Grimaldi (1779-1837) at All Saints Church in Haggerston, Hackney.

The 60th annual service was conducted by the Rev Rose Hudson-Wilkin and clowns' chaplain the Rev Roly Bain.

A wreath was laid, followed by a show in Haggerston, which is home to the Clowns' Gallery and Museum.

Grimaldi, who first appeared on stage at Drury Lane when he was less than two years old, is thought to be the inspiration for the clown nickname "Joey".
