A vision to transform and revitalise the West End is being unveiled.

Local businesses hope the week-long exhibition at Oxford Street's John Lewis store will spark a debate about the future of the commercial area.

The public is being asked to scrutinise the results of a study that concluded the zone needs more transport, wider pavements and better security.

"Choices for a Better West End" focused on Oxford Street, Bond Street and Regent Street.

In a recent survey, Oxford Street was overtaken by New Bond Street as the UK's most expensive street to rent a shop, for the first time in 20 years.

The suggestions that are on display could happen, but what is really important is that they spark a public debate

Last month, a street party was held in Oxford Street in an attempt to boost trade which has suffered from the 7 July bomb attacks and the congestion charge.

The New West End Company, made up of local businesses and shops, carried out the study to create a framework for a vision for the area.

Together with the exhibition, which opens on Friday, the study identifies changes needed to re-assert the West End as a leading shopping and leisure destination.

Gary Reeves, chief executive of New West End Company, said: "The suggestions that are on display could happen, but what is really important is that they spark a public debate that leads to something happening."
