Four galleries which form the London museum 'Hub' are to receive an extra £7m over the next three years.
The museums include the Museum of London, Geffrye Museum Trust, Horniman Museum and London's Transport Museum.
They have been awarded funding from Renaissance, a national scheme to transform England's regional museums.
The money is part of a £100m package to revitalise museums in England. Other smaller and independent galleries will also benefit from a £21m share.
Mark Wood, chair of the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) which manages the Renaissance scheme said: "London is best known for its major national institutions like the V&A and British Museum, but it also includes some outstanding examples of non-national museums and galleries."
He said the MLA now wants to see London's non-national museums benefit from the investment it brings.
The term 'non-national museum' refers to publicly funded museums, other than those directly funded by central government.
