The Unilever Family Report, Home Alone? found in the boroughs of Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea, almost half the population live alone.
It also revealed that 94% of Londoners thought it was important to live alone before settling down.
The research was designed to find out why people live on their own and to what extent it was a choice.
Feeling lonely
The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) spoke to 1,000 people who live alone for the survey.
It revealed how single living affects men and women differently, with 56% of men saying they sometimes feel lonely compared to 48% of women.
Despite this almost a quarter of respondents from London said they would like to continue living alone indefinitely.
The IPPR said by 2021, over 35% of all households are expected to be made up of people living alone.
