An Asian man boasted how he had "killed a white man" after a computer programmer was kicked to death outside a university, the Old Bailey has heard.

Christopher Yates, 30, was knocked to the ground and kicked like a football by three Asian men, prosecutors said.

A teenage girl said she overheard the remark in the grounds of the University of East London last November.

Sajid Zulfigar, 25, Zahid Bashir, 23, and Imran Maqsood, 21, all of Ilford, east London, deny murder.

Mr Bashir and Mr Maqsood also deny violent disorder.

Mr Yates, was a former student at the university who lived nearby with his mother.

'Ferocious attack'

He had been celebrating a friend's birthday and had just seen a friend on to a bus in the early hours when he was attacked on a road leading to the campus.

Anthony Leonard QC, prosecuting, said the reason for the attack was unclear but the defendants had all been drinking.

"It was a ferocious attack. Having been felled to the ground, he was kicked about the body and head.

"His head was stamped on with some force."

After the attack Mr Zulfigar was allegedly overheard saying "we have killed a white man".

Mr Leonard QC said that the three men had gone on to assault two other people, damage cars and set off car alarms.

The trial continues.
