Man, 20, accused of murder on bus
Richard Whelan
Mr Whelan was stabbed to death last month
A man has appeared in court charged with murdering another passenger on the top deck of a bus in north London.

Anthony Leon Joseph, 20, is accused of stabbing Richard Whelan to death on the number 43 bus in Islington, on 29 July.

Mr Whelan, 28, was on his way home from a night out with his girlfriend when he was stabbed, apparently after asking a man to stop throwing chips.

Highbury Magistrates Court remanded Mr Joseph, from Islington, in custody until 14 November.

The next hearing will be at the Old Bailey.

Mr Whelan, a hospitality agent who sold tickets for sporting events, was on his way back to Kentish Town, north London, with his girlfriend when he was stabbed shortly after 2200 BST.

It later emerged that one of his friends, Ciaran Cassidy, was among those killed in the bomb attacks on London on 7 July.
