Former No 10 door to be displayed
Winston Churchill
The former No 10 door will be situated in the Churchill Museum
The old No 10 Downing Street door that Winston Churchill walked through when he was Prime Minister is being installed in a central London museum.

The door, which will be the key feature in the Churchill Museum in the Cabinet War Rooms, opens to the public on 11 February 2005.

The door was No 5 until 1779 when the houses along Downing Street were renumbered and the door was replaced.

The museum will be dedicated to the life and times of Winston Churchill.

The door dates from the 1770s when the Duke of Newcastle was Prime Minister.

It has a lion's head door knocker and brass letter-box and is inscribed 'First Lord of the Treasury'.

Visitors to the museum will be able to pose for photographs in front of the famous door once they have toured the museum.
