Teens jailed for racist killing

Two teenagers who beat an Asian pensioner to death in a racial attack have been jailed for 10 years each.

Michael Evans and James Carney ran off laughing after the assault on 2 April this year, an Old Bailey jury was told.

Their victim, Akberali Mohamedally, 80, suffered irreversible brain damage after the attack in a subway in Northolt, west London.

Evans, 17, and Carney, now 20, both from Northolt, were cleared of murder but convicted of manslaughter.

Sentencing them, Judge Giles Forrester said: "This case involves violence of the most brutal and ugly kind aggravated by racism.

You laughed and joked about it... then you boasted about what you had done - at least until you knew he was dead

"He [the victim] posed no threat to anyone. He was utterly defenceless and particularly vulnerable, that was the man the pair of you attacked.

"There was not a hint of provocation. It was a deliberate and wicked attack on a defenceless old man because of the colour of his skin.

"You laughed and joked about it. Then you boasted about what you had done - at least until you knew he was dead."

Mr Mohamedally had been drinking in the same public house as the defendants and they all ended up in the White Hart Lane subway on their way home.

Broken neck

"There Mr Mohamedally was beaten up for no other reason but for the fact he was Asian," Aftab Jafferjee, prosecuting, said.

"As one of the defendants was heard to say to his friend 'I hate Pakis'. Both were seen to run away laughing."

The punches inflicted on the pensioner were so powerful that they propelled him so his head hit a wall, breaking his neck.

While he was on the ground, one of the pair was seen kicking him.

Det Supt Ken Bell, who led the investigation, said: "The attack on Mr Mohamedally was despicable and carried out by two cowardly individuals."
