Prison officers are dealing with up to five incidents of attempted suicide a day at a women's prison in north London, the prison service has said.
During one night at Holloway Prison, warders prevented a woman from hanging herself on six occasions.
A Prison Service spokesman said: "We believe that five suicide attempts a day at Holloway is a fair estimate."
But the spokesman stressed the number of attempts did not "necessarily equate to five individuals".
