A man and woman are recovering from their injuries after being shot in the street in north-west London.

Two men on a motorbike are believed to have fired shots at the pair as they walked past the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead at 1715 GMT on Wednesday.

The casualty department was closed to new arrivals and the area was cordoned off while police looked for clues.

The victims, who are not thought to have been together, are believed to be in a stable condition in hospital.

The casualty department has now reopened.

An eyewitness who works nearby, told BBC London: "We heard gunshots and we went outside and we saw a motorcycle speeding off.

"There was on woman shot in the leg and another guy. Straight away the whole area was sectioned off, we had to take everyone out."

Police say they are keeping an open mind about the motive.

A spokesman said: "It is believed at this stage that shots were fired from a passing motorcycle containing a rider and pillion passenger."

He added: "The area, particularly in and around the accident and emergency department of the hospital and in Pond Street, would have been very busy at the time.

"We would also like to hear from anyone who may have seen two men acting suspiciously on or near a motorcycle prior to the incident."
