Nocton 'super dairy' plans withdrawn

Proposals for a 'super dairy' farm in Lincolnshire, which would be the largest in the UK, have been withdrawn.

Developers had submitted plans to North Kesteven District Council for an 8,100 cow dairy at Nocton.

They now want more time to address technical issues in the proposals but intend to submit another application.

Animal welfare campaigners had opposed the plans and some residents said they were concerned about the impact on the local roads and environmental issues.

'Very positive'

Compassion in World Farming and The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) said they feared the intensive system would give cows a short lifespan.

The firm said the dairy would have the "highest" welfare standards.

Director of Nocton Dairies, Peter Willes, said: "I don't think we've got that many people opposed to it.

"I think the animal rights people have alarmed a lot of people.

"People are understanding a lot more about dairy farms, which I think is very positive."

The firm said it would undertake more surveys and detailed reports with a "view towards resubmitting a new planning application in the near future".

It is thought the site would create about 80 jobs.
