Warnings over 25-mile diversion

Drivers in Lincolnshire are being warned to allow extra time for journeys as work to improve the A46 begins.

A 25-mile (40km) diversion will be in place for three nights - from 12-14 January - as the southbound Swinderby to Windthorpe stretch is closed.

The road will be resurfaced and essential drainage works will also be carried out between 2000 and 0600 GMT.

Jonathan Pizzey from the Highways Agency said disruption would be kept to a minimum.

Speaking about the long diversion route, Mr Pizzey said: "The main reason is that the Highways Agency mainly uses A roads and major B roads to divert our traffic and try not to divert traffic onto minor B roads and roads in smaller villages.

"We try to minimise disruption to people living near the road."
