Engineers promise 'quieter' road

A £3.8m project to replace a stretch of the A180 in north Lincolnshire will reduce noise in the area, Highways Agency officials said.

The westbound carriageway between Croxton and Ulceby will be closed until March during installation of the new low-noise surface.

Work on the 3.8km (2.4 mile) stretch of road started on Saturday. A contraflow system has been put in place.

Residents had campaigned to reduce noise on the dual carriageway.

Delays expected

The work will also upgrade safety fencing, road markings and drainage.

The A180 runs between the ports of Immingham and Grimsby and connects north Lincolnshire with the national motorway network including the M180, M18, M1 and M62.

Delays are expected and motorists have been advised to allow extra time for their journeys. A 50mph speed limit will be in place for the duration of the work.

The Highways Agency said the carriageway was being replaced because of cracking in the concrete surface caused by the number of heavy loads leaving the port areas.
