Woman killed on A1 'broken down'

A woman who was killed as she tried to cross the A1 in Lincolnshire may have broken down or run out of petrol, police said.

Johanna Gumbley, 20, from Grantham, was killed as she tried to cross at the Fox Inn in South Witham on Friday night.

The northbound carriageway of the A1 was closed for 18 hours while investigations were carried out.

Police said the driver of a BMW suffered shock but was not injured in the accident.

A spokesman said it was possible she had been hit by other cars on the northbound carriageway of the busy road.

It is thought the woman may have been in a Land Rover which either broke down or ran out of petrol on the southbound carriageway.

Witnesses who may have seen the woman shortly after 1900 GMT have been urged to contact police.
