Memorial plan for Polish squadron

The memorial will be built from bomber parts and runway concrete

A memorial is being built using parts of Lancaster bombers to honour Polish airmen who flew the aircraft from a Lincolnshire airbase.

The Polish 300 Squadron flew the bombers from RAF Faldingworth during World War II.

Organiser Colin Mitchell-Smith said he is hoping parts from bombers shot down in England, France, Denmark and Belgium can be recovered to form the memorial.

A special memorial service will be held on 8 September at the airbase.

Mr Mitchell-Smith said the base of the monument would be made from parts of broken pieces of concrete from the airbase's former runway "to represent the tragedy and horror of war".

"It (the memorial) is to remember what these people gave so that we could at that time not be overrun by the tyranny that was threatening.

"It also represents how people can come together from all sorts of backgrounds and from all countries," he added.

He said the base was staffed with Polish ground crew, administrators and bombers.
