Police identify fire death victim
scene of fire at St Leonard Close
Neighbours tried to rescue the pensioner from the fire
A man who died in a suspicious fire at his home in Lincolnshire has been named by police.

A murder inquiry is underway after Alexander James Ash, 74, died from smoke inhalation after the fire at St Leonard Close early on Monday.

Neighbours tried to rescue the man but were beaten back by the flames.

The cause of the fire has not yet been identified but a police spokeswoman said "early indications suggest it was started deliberately".

Gay community

Lincolnshire Police said Mr Ash was well known in the local area.

Supt Roger Bannister said: "We understand the victim could well have been gay and because of this we are appealing to the gay community for support in tracing further information about his life.

"Although we have no reason to suggest he was targeted because of his sexuality, we are working closely with the Southern Independent Advisory Group and the Gay and Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Forum.

"We are encouraging anyone who knew Mr Ash or believe they may have any information about him to come forward."
