County remembers its own captain
Councillors in East Lindsey are cashing in on their links with a town about to celebrate its 400th anniversary.

Captain John Smith, from Willoughby, Lincs, helped set up Jamestown, Virginia, USA. He landed in 1607 and helped to colonise the area.

And the council has launched a tourist leaflet on a John Smith trail.

Pupils at Willoughby and Partney junior schools have worked with Louth author John Haden to write a book about Capt Smith his travels and triumphs.

Council chairman Brian Burnett said it was time the county "got smart" about its historical figures, including Capt Smith.

This move comes after the council published two leaflets to encourage tourists all year round - one for inland areas and market towns, and another for coastal areas.

The council area covers Skegness, Mablethorpe, the Lincolnshire Wolds, Louth and Horncastle.
