Police are warning motorists across the East Midlands that icy roads are creating dangerous driving conditions.

Many routes across the region are still covered in ice and snow as gritters battle the worst-hit areas.

But staff at Nottingham East Midlands Airport say all flights are operating normally, despite the freezing weather.

The airport was closed for a short time on Wednesday when flights from other airports were diverted there.

Schools closed

Police say the icy conditions caused dozens of minor accidents and breakdowns overnight, leading to delays on main routes in Derbyshire and Leicestershire.

More than 100 schools in Lincolnshire remained closed on Thursday, while dozens more were shut in Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

Motorists have been advised to carry warm clothes, food, water, boots, a torch and a spade when driving in snow.

The AA has put on extra patrols with a higher number of breakdowns expected.

East Midlands Electricity is on standby for any problems caused by the snow.
