Facelift planned for Leicester's De Montfort Hall

A £200,000 refurbishment of Leicester's main concert venue will be completed in time for its centenary.

De Montfort Hall was built in 1913 and has hosted acts like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Kasabian but has not been renovated since 1994.

Work will see main public and backstage areas redecorated and toilets improved, as well as landscaping of the gardens.

Last year the city council confirmed the venue had overspent by £1.4m but insisted its future was not in doubt.

The area in De Montfort Hall's gardens that is occupied by the main stage of Summer Sundae Festival will be levelled and drainage works improved in advance of the anniversary event on 10 August.

Councillor Patrick Kitterick, cabinet lead for regeneration and transport, said: "This investment in the hall will breathe new life into the historic venue.

"De Montfort Hall hasn't had a facelift for 16 years and needs to be updated to maintain the well-loved facility."

The work is expected to be completed by the autumn and should not disrupt any events.
