Brothers die in ice lake fall in Leicestershire park

Lakes map

Two brothers have died after falling through ice while walking on a frozen Leicestershire lake.

Fire, police, ambulance and helicopter rescue crews were called to the lake at Watermead Country Park near Syston at 1430 GMT on Friday.

A third man who also fell in has been discharged from hospital; a fourth group member did not enter the water.

All four men are thought to be related. They were taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary where the two died.

Whether they thought it was part of the land I don't know, it's early in the inquiry to find out why they were so far out

Insp Andy Cox

Police said the four men, in their 40s and 50s, were found about 30ft (9m) from the lakeside and had been in the water for about 20 minutes.

An eyewitness said the men appeared to be scattering something on the ice. They added that members of the public tried to help them out of the water using ropes.

Insp Andy Cox said: "Members of the public did try to help them initially, but clearly the risk to themselves was extreme.

"Whether they thought it was part of the land I don't know, it's early in the inquiry to find out why they were so far out."
