Burglars steal late wife's ring

Martin Davies said the rings were a link to his wife

A widower has described how burglars took his late wife's wedding ring days after her funeral.

Martin and Jill Davies of Preston, Leicestershire, married in October, a day before she died of cancer.

He went to stay with family in the days after the funeral and during this time the house was broken into and the ring, along with another, was taken.

Mr Davies, who had intended to wear the ring himself, said its loss was painful. Police are investigating.

The other ring taken was decorated with a sapphire and diamonds, a gift from Mr Davies while the couple were on holiday.

'Utterly cruel'

He said: "They were extremely important because of their significance.

"I know they were only things, and I have lost a person, which is obviously different.

"But she wore it for a day and a half and then it was taken - and that hurts."

Family friend Francine Savigear discovered the break-in.

"They meant so much and it was just so utterly cruel.

"It was just the worst thing that could have happened to this poor man."

The burglary happened some time between the morning of 31 October and the evening of 2 November.

Also stolen was a Chinese puzzle box. This is described as a wooden box with a number of hidden compartments.
