Crackdown focuses on off licences

Police carrying out a recent test purchasing operation found 12 out of 57 off licences in Leicester sold alcohol to a 15-year-old.

In each case the shop assistant responsible was interviewed by police and issued with an £80 fine.

Four of the shops may face a review of their licence after repeated failures.

The checks form part of Leicestershire Police's "Safer Summer" drive to reduce anti-social behaviour among young people during the holidays.

Pc Jon Webb, from the city centre violence and disorder team, said: "We were concerned that some youngsters may be out drinking to celebrate the start of the summer holidays so we specifically targeted off licences close to schools, parks and other open spaces."
